Attendance at these AA meetings is voluntary and rewarding to all those who participate. Those who do attend are either brand new to AA or may have been attempting to do some controlled drinking experiments. Meetings tend to focus on the first three steps and identification with the disease of Alcoholism (The Doctor’s Opinion, first four chapters of the Big Book, speaker, etc.). One-on-one sponsorship is typically not practical while they are at this facility due to the brief residency.

These facilities provide short-term housing for males and females in Hillsborough County who are actively participating in a drug or alcohol treatment environment. Attendance at these AA meetings may be either voluntary or mandatory, but it is still rewarding to all those who participate. Those who do attend from the facilities are either brand new to AA or newly sober. Meetings tend to focus on the first three steps and identification with the disease of Alcoholism (The doctor’s opinion, First four chapters of the Big Book, speaker, open discussion, etc.). Most of these facilities encourage their “patients” to find a sponsor from the outside while they are still in a structured environment.

Women’s Prison Meetings

Hillsborough Correctional Institution

11150 County Road 672

Riverview, FL 33569
(813) 671-5022

This facility is one of the pioneers for "faith based" prisons in Florida and the US. Inmates are encouraged to seek a spiritual solution to their problems. The AA meetings are voluntary and very rewarding to those who participate, whether they are from the inside or outside. Although the facility houses only female inmates, it will allow both male and female guest speakers to attend and share their Experience, Strength and Hope. What really makes this facility unique is that it allows for one-on-one sponsorship of an inmate from AA women on the outside. This provides the inmates with a real chance to "get sober" by working the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous while still behind bars.
